Wavy bands in relief, such as those of clay moulded by the river, create a chiaroscuro effect on the surface of Victory, a cladding to be observed through hands and to be touched through eyes. The regular lines create a sense of stability and movement at the same time and evoke the sandy bottom of the sea shaped by the toing and froing of the backwash.
